The Italian Basketball Federation (FIP) was founded in 1921 under the name “Federaione Italiana Basket-Ball”. As soon as it was founded, it became a member of the International Federation of Amateur Basketball (FIBA). Italy quickly established itself on the European scene, winning its first medal in 1937 at the European Championship. The following years saw the rise of Italian basketball, notably with the organization of the European Championships in 1946 and 1991, where Italy distinguished itself. The men’s national team won two Olympic silver medals in 1980 and 2004, and the women’s team also distinguished itself at European level. At European level, the men’s national team won 2 European championships in 1983 and 1999. Over the decades, the FIP has contributed to the development of basketball in Italy, organizing numerous events and tournaments. The country became a key player on the world stage, thanks to its successful clubs and players who played in the major leagues. The 2000s saw the federation pursue its commitment to the sport, with particular emphasis on training young talent and promoting women’s basketball. Today, the FIP continues to play a central role in promoting basketball in Italy. It is committed to developing the sport at all levels, from amateur to professional, with an emphasis on inclusion and innovation. The federation remains a pillar of Italian sport, working to ensure that Italy retains its place among the world’s top basketball nations. With its rich history and numerous successes, the FIP is a respected institution that contributes greatly to the image of basketball in Italy and abroad. While Gli Azzuri failed to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics during their TQO in Puerto Rico, they finished in the Top 10 of the last 2 major competitions, finishing 8th at the 2023 World Cup and Euro 2022. The girls finished 9th at Euro 2023.
